19 Dec CLUB AWARDS FOR 2023
What a great year of running! Congratulations to everyone in the club for your efforts and performances this year. Ludlow Runners is full of amazing people who are inspiring for a whole variety of reasons and the award winners for this year provide a wonderful snapshot of what the club is all about.
Ludlow Runners is proud to present the club award winners for 2023.
STAR RUNNER AWARD WINNERS
This year we asked members to nominate runners who had inspired them for whatever reason and the winners were those that received the most nominations. So here are the winners receiving their awards from club Chair Nick Young, with a brief resume of the comments left on the nomination forms.
LES EDWARDS
Les has made great progress in his running this year with great runs at Tenbury 10k (55 ins) and Barmouth 10k (just under the hour) in very hot conditions. Les is a kind and selfless team leader for the Event 2 training group who makes sure everyone is catered for on social and training runs. He organises Sunday runs too and is a shining example of the friendly face of the club.
KAREN THOMPSON
Karen has achieved amazing things in her running this year, completing two marathons and several half marathons. She met the challenges of training for her first marathon, stuck to the plan and smashed it at Manchester. Karen is also a great run leader and has also trained up as a coach this year so she can write training plans for club members.
JAN BENJAMIN
Jan is the welcoming face of the club. She takes care of slower runners, new people joining a run for the first time and she makes sure that running in an unfamiliar group is not intimidating for people. She has been one of the driving forces of the popular Tuesday morning social running group, ensuring that there is a leader each week and that everyone keeps together on the run.
SARAH MEEK
Sarah rejoined the club fairly recently and has stepped straight back into run leading with confidence. She is always enthusiastic, friendly and encouarging and is keen to do the best for other runners. She always makes nervous newcomers feel at home too. Sarah is also an inspiration in the way she approaches her own running. She puts 100% into every race she enters and sets herself challenges which she achieves, getting the job done her way.
JEMMA RADMORE
Jemma ran an amazing first marathon at Manchester this year, finishing in an outstanding 3 hours 34 minutes at the age of only 19. This performance has gained her a good for age time and entry into the London Marathon in 2024. Jemma has run in countless other events over the year achieving great results and flying the Ludlow Runners flag.
STAR RUNNER AWARD RUNNERS UP
CLARE BROOME
Clare is an inspirational runner and a great role model. She likes a race event and has been very successful this year (read on to find out more). She is also very supportive of others, whether on training runs or in races. Clare is another club member who always has a smile for everyone!
JESS MORRIS
Jess is a determined runner and always gives 100%. She regularly competes in 5 and 10k races and always with a smile! She is always happy to step in and help in her role as an assistant run leader.
MARK ROSS
Mark is a true inspiration. He has come back from serious illness this year and built his running up succesfully whilst supporting others along the way.
CAROL MORGAN
Having taken a setback in her own running, Carol had the brilliant idea of starting a walking group for those who aren’t up to running for a whole variety of reasons. This has proved a great addition to what the club has to offer and makes sure members can still take part in club training even though they can’t run.
THE CLEOBURY MORTIMER TROPHY
This trophy was given to the club by Jo Watson and Andie Ford as a thank you to Ludlow Runners for supporting them when they set up Cleobury Mortimer Running Club.
Every year it is presented to a club member who has made a significant contribution to the club over the course of the year. There was a stand out candidate in 2023 as this person received the greatest number of nominations from club members and the comments reflect the valued contribution she has made to the club.
JAN BENJAMIN
Jan has made a huge contribution to the club this year. She has worked hard organising the Tuesday morning social runs and regularly supported the Chatty 2 group on Thursdays. She is a committed run leader who always turns up to leaders meetings so she can represent the people she runs with. Her contribution and ideas are invaluable. She believes that it is important to do your bit for the club if you want it to succeed and Jan does just that. Thank you Jan for everything you do.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Every year the committee chooses a selection of races that form the Club Championships. Club members get points for every one of the listed races that they compete in. The higher the position in the race, the more points given. At the end of the year the best six results are taken for each participant to arrive at a final score. Here are this year’s winners.

TIMELESS 5km AWARD 2023 – SANDY ROSS
The club organised two Timeless 5km events this year, where participants have to predict their finishing time and then run without a watch or phone! The winner is the runner whose predicted time is closest (either slower or faster) than their actual time. Sandy ran both events and had the lowest cumulative predicted time, 13 seconds off his finishing time in the first event and a mere 10 seconds off in the second event. Amazing predictions Sandy!
