TRAINING RUNS

If you enjoy going for a run then the following groups are for you. Although the groups may have specific goals, many people come along to keep fit, healthy and enjoy a run with friends. The main focus for each group is a simple training run but we offer some variety as shown in the descriptions below.

BEGINNERS COURSE

PINK

An eight week beginners course.

The course builds up your running gradually, at a gentle 'chatty' pace, so that by week 8 you will be running or run/walking for 40 minutes.

The course is perfect for those new to running or returning after a long break. No basic level of fitness is required as the course caters for all. Find out more here.

At other times this group is a walk/run group which is ideal for anyone returning to running after a break.

Anne Thorpe*

Helen Clarke

PURPLE

People in this group are comfortable running between 5 and 6km in an hour.

A typical Thursday run may involve a continuous 'chatty' run, a 'chatty' run with some ten second 'sparkles' or strides or there may be a few optional slightly faster efforts.

Our broad aim is to build up the distance you can run in the hour but if you want to tackle your first parkrun or work towards running in a 10km event training with this group will help you.

Colin Lancaster*

GREEN

People in this group are comfortable running 7-8k in an hour.

This group is for people who like to do a steady run rather than different paced efforts.

STRUCTURED TRAINING SESSIONS

These sessions will usually include a variety of paces and effort levels. These groups generally cover a greater distance in the hour than the training run groups and they may follow a periodised plan ledaing up to target races. However, each group's sessions are suitable for anyone who wants to improve their fitness whether aiming to compete in events or not.

BLUE

This is a mixed ability structured training group for those who can run between 6 and 8km in an hour.

This group is a good introduction to sessions that include varied paced efforts and hill training. Sessions are adapted to meet the needs of those who turn up on the day. It's ideal training if you are working towards improving your parkrun or 10k times, or thinking of entering a half marathon.

Sally Toye*

Sharon Bowers

RED

People in this group are comfortable running between 9 and 10km in an hour.

Having some base fitness will help you get the most out of these sessions.. A typical Thursday session includes efforts of some variety which are often out and back, starting and finishing in the same place, so you don't need to worry about being at the back of the pack.

Richard Ingram*

Les Edwards

Trish Collier

Louisa Hughes

YELLOW

People in this group are comfortable running between 9 and 10km in an hour.

Similar to the red group but the overall pace is generally faster. Having a good level of base fitness will help you get the most out of these sessions which usually includes efforts of some variety. This could be hill reps, intervals, at varied paces and high intensity training. Efforts are usually out and back, starting and finishing in the same place, so you don't need to worry about being at the back of the pack.
